I've just had a lovely weekend in Muscat but just in case Fingers thinks I am basking too much in the afterglow, here are three things that have pissed me off of late...
• People posting comments on Radar wishing Germaine Greer uterine cancer and basically slagging her off for being unmarried and childless. As if that's a great crime and somehow makes her opinions null and void. If you disagree with her comments on Steve Irwin that is your right, but there's no need for unrelated personal attacks. Nobody ever calls into question the fertility status, marital status or sexuality of male commentators and columnists. Funny, that.
• John Howard's calls for all Muslims to learn English. Australia is an English-speaking nation so obviously it is helpful to know your way around the language but he conveniently fails to mention drastic funding cuts he has made to English language programs for migrants. The man is a hypocritical piece of crap.
• My lovely weeked in Muscat coming to an end all too soon. Oops. Sorry...

Georgia i completely agree with you about Greer. One of the newspapers here on saturday ran a front page headline that said "email the old cow and tell her what you think" and they gave her email address.
I felt really off after reading those Radar comments. My personal thoughts are that maybe GG's timing was a tad off, but she was welcome to her opinion. Having nursed many people with cancer, I can't see how she deserves to suffer like that, purely for airing her thoughts. My 6yr old girl cried when she heard about SI. I was sadder for the family, I guess. Losing a parent is never fair, be it SI's kids, or any joe Blow's kids.
It just makes me really upset for my fellow Australians when they are reduced to such mindless personal attacks. Which paper had the "email the old cow" line???? The Daily Terror? I bet they'd never run an "email the old bastard" if it was a man.
I think GG and those commenters are in the same bucket. You dont wish someone something as horrible as cancer and you dont say that someone deserved to die.
You should go to Radar now and read the Tom Cruise propaganda fest which appears to have grabbed hold of the phone lines. Hilarious.
I reckn Katie's baby's father is Chris Klein and Suri was born way sooner than we were led to believe...
Luvvie, normally I can't stand what Germs writes but the Steve Irwin article was a cracker. Maybe the medication has kicked in.
Very true. Old Germaine does have her mad moments, such as that creepy lust for young boys article which I responded to in the Herald may moons ago. But I loved her work on Grumpy Old Women and her piece on Steve Irwin was a rare flash of perspective in a ridiculous week.
The Greer attacks were just ridiculous.
Whatever happened to "I may not like what you have to say, but I will defend your right to say it?"
The last week has been a sad time for freedom of speech in Australia. Especially the "email the old cow" bit in a paper. That is so embarrassingly infantile.
Yeh, i cant stand germs but that is going way too far!
Muscats at ten paces?
The gun or the drink? Or we could just confuse things and produce musk sticks instead.
I agree with you about the child being fathered by Chris Klein. Chris is a staunch Christian apparently so perhaps he didnt want the child out of wedlock.
Definitely not Cruise's kid. I hope the child isnt raised in the same freaky manner as Michael Jackson's children.
GG's comments were insensitive but some do agree. I dont agree with the public cancer wishes to her either.
It is SO Chris Klein's baby. Katie is also a "good" Catholic girl so it all makes sense. She finds out she is knocked up after she breaks up with him, she doesn't want to have an abortion (love how Catholics can justify the sin of premarital sex but not abortion, love it... Freaks.) Enter Tom Cruise with a film to plug and again keen to prove to the world he's not gay. Perfect for him to "hook up" with Katie so she doesn't look like a slapper and he doesn't look like a homosexual. The pregnancy seemed to go on for a long time and towards the end, the bump was a very weird shape. I think she gave birth much earlier and then gadded about with a cushion up her dress.
