In news just at hand, I am pleased to report good things about the Dubai police force. I was attacked and had the added nightmare of being spoken to by a police officer as if I was some sort of slatternly whore when I tried to report the crime. But thanks to friends with contacts a tad higher up in the police force than the bloke who answers the phones, I have actually made some progress, been taken seriously and have reported the incident. I have a very helpful detective on the case, assorted majors and lieutenants who are well-educated have treated me with great respect and not accused me of making it up or implied that by being an unmarried woman walking alone I was in some way asking to be grabbed by a random guy at a bus stop. If you are ever in Dubai and you need to report a crime, do not be afraid to report it but insist that you speak to someone above the phone dude or the front desk dude. Do not try and tell the whole story at the front desk or over the phone. It is also helpful to bring someone with you who has some knowledge of Arabic. It is good to finally feel like my horrible incident is being taken seriously and they are keen to catch this vile man.

Geogia - what a horrible experience to go through.
I'm happy that you're making progress with the police, but also saddened that it took extra effort, and for more people to be involved, for your report to be taken seriously.
It's another lesson that this region (and others!) has to learn - it's one thing to claim world-class everything, but if your frontline reception is not sympathetic, then you may as well take your world-class system and flush it down the toilet.
Damn right. The police really need to train the frontline guys to be much more sensitive when someone is trying to report a sexual assault. At that time, you want reassurance, not some muppet accusing you of making it up and making weird disapproving noises when you tell them you're not married. It seems as if the guy who answered the phone when I made the call fancied himself as an amateur Perry Mason and tried to interrogate me himself. He even went as far as to try and make me claim the attack happened at a different time! It was only because of a few media mates that I was able to take the matter further. It makes me wonder what the rate of unreported crime must be in this city.
"slatternly whore"....sounds like my type ;-P
I'm only a slatternly whore for special people...
good for you georgia!
how bloody frustrating and annoying that you have to 'pull rank' to get anything done and get the treatment and respect that you should.
barsts.
Yeah, I shouldn't have had to use media contacts to get my case taken seriously. The lazy guy on the front desk when I went to the police station was clearly just there getting fatter and fatter and marking time until he can draw a pension!
Hi georgia,
Just landed up here randomly from somewhere else. You have a nice writing style. Cheers
Rohan
I hope they catch the guy and good job, you, for reporting the crime! A serious pain in the patella here, for sure, but well worth it.
Imagine the dude in a Dubai jail...or even better, maybe he'll get busted in Sharjah...oh yeah...
